About the blog…
So glad you made it here. You’re looking for a way to be healthy, and to keep your family healthy. But you’re not sure what that might take. You’re not even sure what being truly healthy looks like.
In these pages I present what I’ve learned from experts about optimal wellness and what it takes to achieve. These experts, however, are not those you see on daily talk shows or hear about on the nightly news. They’re medical doctors, alternative health practitioners, complementary practitioners, and people, like me, who’ve spent their lives looking for a better way.
My Mission…
My name is Judy Major, and I’m passionate about understanding why we get sick and how we can heal ourselves with the remedies nature provides. I research and write in order to educate and empower individuals, families, schools, and communities to make choices that improve their health.
We are under siege from pharmaceutical companies that cover up natural cures and treatments and foist dangerous drugs on a trusting public; physicians who are taught to identify symptoms, assign a disease, then treat it without asking if the disease itself is merely a symptom; and a government bureaucracy, court system, and media that all seem either unaware that there are safe alternatives or are powerless to affect discussion.
We are, too, under siege from an industrialized mega food system that works in a way that destroys our environment, hurts our farmers, and causes epidemic rises in allergies, chronic disease, and obesity.
And, we are under siege from the impact of chemicals and other toxins that are everywhere in our lives. (Over 200 chemicals were found in the umbilical cord blood of newborns!) These toxins are in our air, our water, our land, our homes, and in our foods.
The more I learn, the more I see that we cause our own pain because we don’t know, we’re confused with too much bad information, or we believe that illness is a natural part of living and aging.
My Story…
I’ve been chronically unwell most of my life. Not sick, mind you, so that doctors could actually attach a diagnosis. (Except when they finally determined that I had a serious kidney infection. That was after five weeks of serious illness, a pre-diagnosis of polio, and isolation in a specialty hospital far from home when my parents were on vacation much farther away. After massive doses of antibiotics, I recovered from the infection. I was six.) Just niggly joint pains, digestive complaints, migraines, depression, hyper-anxiety, exhaustion.
Nobody noted that the illness when I was six was just months after my oldest sister, who had nurtured me from birth, married and left home.
Nobody seemed to know the antibiotics also killed all of the good bacteria in my gut, leaving it out of balance.
And nobody connected the way I felt to the food that I ate.
So, I guess I recovered, but the effects of the assault on body and mind continued.
I began my search as a teen; reading as many books as I could get a hold of in the field of natural health and wellness. I learned about Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine; both from the same ancient source. I learned about herbs, vitamins, and minerals. I learned about alternative practitioners – acupuncturists, chiropractors, naturopaths, homeopaths. I learned about the benefits of massage therapy, reflexology, reiki, meditation… so many complementary practices that enhance other treatments.
I learned that illness can be a result of:
- the psychological impact of stress; from loss, for example,
- the imbalance of bacteria in the gut; from antibiotics without probiotics,
- sensitivities to particular foods, which can result in thyroid imbalance and weak adrenal glands.
I began to question my doctors’ advice; recognizing that they have specific expertise, particularly in emergency treatment (even though I finally had to go to an acupuncturist to increase the blood flow to my broken toe when it didn’t self-repair in more than six weeks), but their education didn’t cover much that could help them keep their patients well.
As a result of what I learned:
- I opted out of artificial hormone replacement therapy when it was the thing to do,
- I chose not to undergo a biopsy when a shadow appeared on a mammogram; now I replace dangerous mammograms with self-exams,
- I chose not to take calcium supplements, daily aspirin, or worry about my cholesterol.
And the one time I was shot up with cortisone for a heel spur, before I could ask a question or protest, I determined to find a natural solution. When the relief is far more painful and debilitating than the condition and isn’t even a cure, I figured there had to be a better way. (There is.)
More seriously, I watched my father die from one medical mistake, and my sister permanently disabled from another.
I watched my son, never exposed to chicken pox except through his vaccine, suffer more from shingles at 17 then all three of my other boys who shared the childhood malady and recovered with greater ease.
For the past four decades, I’ve researched all areas of natural healing and practiced most of them. But recently, I’ve become aware of new assaults on our health and our planet…the food system itself and the culture that supports it.
All of the wonderful books out there today that talk about the relationship between food and health don’t mention that the food has to be at its best to be of benefit, and ours today is not.
So in these pages, you’ll also read about this assault, where it comes from, and how you can make better choices to protect yourself and your loved ones. You’ll read about the dangers of the vaccines approved for use in our country (but not in others), pharmaceutical drugs with their side effects listed in columns of fine print, and poison in your home. You’ll read what experts say about the underlying causes of disease itself.
And I’ll offer the latest and best research on what steps you can take to optimal wellness.
I’m glad you’re here.
Blessings,
Judy
